Next month marks the 20th anniversary of the theatrical release of How Stella Got Her Groove Back, director Kevin Rodney Sullivan‘s hit adaptation of Terry McMillan‘s best-selling novel. (She co-wrote the screenplay with Rain Man writer Ron Bass).
The film stars Angela Bassett as Stella, a successful and business-driven 42-year-old stockbroker living in California. Feeling the pressure of maintaining her career while raising her son, she decides to take a break and go on a lavish vacation to Jamaica with best friend Delilah (a scene-stealing Whoopi Goldberg).
Once there, she has everything she thought she knew about life and love upended when she meets Winston (Taye Diggs), a man half her age. As she begins a tentative romance with him, Stella re-evaluates what she really wants, embarking a journey to inner peace that will forever change her world.
